Radiological changes in hepatic amoebiasis.

چکیده
Radiological abnormalities were observed in 88-3% of patients with the syndrome of hepatic amoebiasis. While this figure is higher than those reported in previous studies, it appears that it is due to the large number of patients who showed an elevation of the diaphragm in the right lateral views ofthe chest. It was observed that a proportion of the patients with an elevation of the right dome of the diaphragm in the lateral views showed no significant elevation in the postero-anterior views, these patients constituting a radiologically distinct group. It is thus important that lateral views of the chest should be performed routinely in all cases of suspected hepatic amoebiasis. Cases of proved hepatic abscesses also conform to one or other of the radiological groups described. Abscesses situated inferiorly or anteriorly in the liver could be associated with an elevation of the right dome of the diaphragm. While chest radiology is of importance in the diagnosis of the syndrome of hepatic amoebiasis, it is not peculiar to this syndrome alone and is of only relative diagnostic value in clinically differentiating the cases where pus may be demonstrated from the cases where pus may not be demonstrable.

Significance of elevation of the right dome of the diaphragm.
Elevation of the right dome of the diaphragm occurs in a small proportion of healthy young adults, and in a proportion of patients with cardiac disease, cirrhosis of the liver and gastroenteritis. Hence this radiological feature, although common in hepatic amoebiasis, should be considered in concurrence with the other clinical features in the diagnosis of hepatic disorders. The significance of ...
متن کاملEvaluation of a rapid enzyme immunoassay for diagnosis of hepatic amoebiasis.
We compared the capability of rapid enzyme immunoassay (EIA) to detect antiamoebic antibodies during hepatic amoebiasis with those of indirect hemagglutination and latex agglutination. EIA is simple to perform and rapid (20 min) and does not require any special equipment (optical reading is sufficient). EIA of 143 sera (including 43 from patients with proven hepatic amoebic abscess, 33 from pat...
متن کاملPrimary pulmonary amoebiasis--an unusual cause of pulmonary consolidation.
While colonic and hepatic amoebiasis occur commonly in tropical countries, primary pulmonary amoebiasis remains a rare condition. Pulmonary involvement, when it occurs, is usually secondary to amoebic liver abscess. Primary pulmonary amoebiasis is thought to occur via haematogenous spread. We report a case of primary pulmonary amoebiasis confirmed by visualizing the trophozoites of entamoeba hi...
متن کاملAmoebic Liver Abscess: Revisited
Amoebiasis is common in Asia, Africa, and South America, and is endemic in many regions of the Philippines1-4. Hepatic involvement is a frequent extra-intestinal complication which is encountered in 3 to 9% of the cases of amoebiasis. In Africa, over a period of 20 years, the King Edward VIII Hospital reported 2,074 cases of hepatic abscess, while in New York City at the Mt. Sinai Hospital only...
متن کاملIsolated Hepatic Tuberculoma – A Case Report
Isolated hepatic tuberculoma is localized hepatic tuberculosis (TB) without bile duct involvement, which presents as solitary or multiple nodular mass lesion of liver mimicking a neoplastic lesion in radiological evaluation. Clinical presentation and biochemical tests for liver functions show non-specific abnormality, which is not helpful for diagnosis. As the treatment, modality of isolated he...
